Oulu in Brief - the fastest growing region in Finland

The Oulu Region is well known for its technology, the hi-tech growth having started after the establishment of Oulu University in 1958. The region is home to over 500 hi-tech companies, such as Nokia, and the sector currently employs over 10,000 people.

There are two science parks in the region: Technopolis Plc, Scandinavia’s first science park, and Medipolis Ltd., as well as a technology centre, Ii Micropolis Ltd.



More traditional industries, such as wood refining, paper and steel industry, are also strong in Oulu. Oulu is investing and will continue to invest more and more in the development of extensive businesses as well as logistics, information technology, content production, media, well-being and bio and environmental fields.

Oulu railway station is one of the busiest in Finland.

The University of Oulu has six faculties: Humanities, Education, Science, Medicine, Economics and Technology. The number of students is nearly 16.000.

There are several research institutes, including VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland and the University Hospital. There is also the multidisciplinary Oulu University of Applied Sciences with 8.600 students having the School of Vocational Teacher Training, School of Business Studies, School of Social and Health Care, Institute of Technology, School of Music, Dance and Media, School of Renewable Natural Resources, Raahe Institute of Computer Engineering and Business.
